Different urban forms manifest themselves in the “longue durée “with changes, over-writings, cancellations and re-significations. Different approaches are possible for the description, interpretation, representation, and explanation of the morphology of the built environment and its transformation in time. This issue “reading urban forms” intends to explore, in a widely interdisciplinary manner, the critical interpretation (reading) of urban forms, from a diachronic viewpoint, and using different scales:

-Territorial scale

-Urban scale

-Scale of urban tissues

-Building scale

CITY RENEWAL AND URBAN ARCHAEOLOGY

CITY RENEWAL AND URBAN ARCHAEOLOGY

The morphological values of city traces

The seventh ISUFItaly International Conference, organized by the Federico II University in the historical Palazzo Gravina, Naples, will examine the relationship between the emerging urban archaeological traces and the conspicuous morphological value that this formal legacy can generate. The Conference aims at establishing new connections between the contemporary city and the ancient artefacts. Within this framework, the conference intends to re-propose urban continuity and/or discontinuity, and the role of urban architecture, as a necessary intermediary within the contemporary city.

The organisers and the ISUFItaly Council are herein inviting Italian and international researchers, practitioners, as well as PhD students who have finished or are completing their research to participate in the Conference.

We will welcome abstract proposals on these main tracks:

Theories for the city’s interpretation

Reading urban form

Urban design and urban archaeology
Architectural composition and archaeology

The Isuf local networks are growing in number and quality of activities. The annual reports sent by the presidents of the different associations in 2025 prove the great interest of the members in organizing new tools for the dissemination of the results of their research, and how the different investigations have dissimilar characteristics linked to the different cultural areas. The specificity of the research topic often requires dedicated tools for reading the built landscape stimulating original and innovative experimentations. Precisely for this reason, Isufitaly has organized a round table to make known and discuss, through brief presentations, the different, specific research conditions, methods, topics of the five networks in formation that will soon be added to the Isuf network family.
